Dvortsovaya (Palace) Square (view from the Winter Palace).
At the centre of the square one sees the Alexander Column (1830-34; archtect: August Montferrand,
sculptor: Boris Orlovsky). The height of the monument (47.5 m)
includes 25.6 m of the granite monolith.
On the other side of the square one sees
the General Headquarter building (1819-29; architect: Carlo Rossi).
Its arch is surmounted by the Chariot of Nika (Victory goddess);
sculptors: S. S. Pimenov and V. I. Demut-Malinovsky.
