The main avenue of St. Petersburg, Nevsky Prospect, at the sunset time.
"Back in Peter the Great's time two roads were cut in an almost straight
line through the marshy forest to link the Admiralty
and the Alexander Nevsky Monastery with the old highway to the ancient city
of Novgorod.
After 1766 only masonry construction was permitted on Nevsky Prospect.
The street's importance as the main entrance to the city
inspired the particular grand splendour of its architecture.
Concentrated along the three-mile thoroughfare are an immense number
of architectural monuments representing all prevailing Russian
tendencies and styles."
