Evgeny Fiodorovich Gross (1897 –1972) – is an eminent physicist-experimentalist. His principal works are dedicated to optics and spectroscopy of the solid state, research on light scattering in condensed matter.
In 1930 he discovered the phenomenon of light scattering on acoustic phonons in crystals
and liquids (Mandelstam-Brillouin phenomenon).
In 1936 the degree of Doctor in physics and mathematics was conferred upon him without defence of a thesis.
Later on he became famous for his works on Raman spectroscopy of molecular crystals (the low Gross frequencies) and the discovery of the exciton spectrum in semiconductor crystals (the Vanier-Mott exciton).
In 1946 E.F.Gross was awarded the Stalin Prize for his works on light scattering; in 1966 E.F.Gross, B.P.Zakharchenia and A.A.Kapliansky were awarded Lenin Prize for investigations of excitons.
In 1946 E.F.Gross was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of USSR.
E.F.Gross is the co-author of the scientific discovery "The phenomenon of the existence of a peculiar excited state crystal-exciton entered in the State register of discoveries under №105 with priority of 1931 and 1951
