The Church of the Resurrection of Christ, known as "Our Saviour-on-the-Spilt-Blood"
(1883-1907; architect: Alfred Parland) on the bank of the
Griboedov (f. Catherine) canal.
The church in the pseudo-old-Russian style was erected
at the place where the "Tsar-Liberator"
Alexander II (1818-81, ruled since 1855)
was mortally wounded
in a bomb attack plotted and realized on 1 March 1881
by assassins from the terrorist organization "The People's Will."
The church (presently museum) is also famous for its marvelous mosaics
created in the mosaic workshops of A. A. and V. A. Frolovs
after sketches performed by
outstanding Russian painters: V. M. Vasnetsov, M. V. Nesterov and others.
