"The first structure intended to defend the new capital from enemy attack was the Peter and Paul fortress built on a small island in the delta of the Neva on the orders of Peter the Great. The Tsar himself sketched out the basic plan. The detailed design and construction of the fortress was supervised by Domenico Tresini, a Swiss-Italian architect and engineer, who spent the latter part of his life in Russia. Thanks to his outstanding talent, this complex piece of military engineering became a grand architectural ensemble, a major landmark in St Petersburg. The focal point of the ensemble is the majestic SS Peter and Paul Cathedral, a gem of the Petrine Baroque."
