St Isaac's Square is situated to the south of the St Isaac
cathedral. At the center, there is a monument to Nicholas I (1796-1855,
ruled since 1825), erected in 1856-1859 (architect: August Montferrand;
sculptor: Piotr Klodt). From the south the square is bordered by
the Mariinsky Palace (1839-1844; architect: A. I. Stackenschneider).
Today this palace (partly seen in the background,
with the Russian banner on the top)
serves as the residence to the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg (the City Council).
